Marina del Rey short term rentals: which rules apply

Last reviewed October 11, 2026. This page summarizes public sources and is not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm with the government that covers the address.

Which government covers the address

Marina del Rey is mostly unincorporated Los Angeles County, not part of the City of Los Angeles. Some addresses with a Marina del Rey mailing address can be inside the City of Los Angeles, so the boundary at the exact address decides which rules apply.

What the County adopted

On March 19, 2024 the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors gave final approval to short term rental rules for unincorporated areas. As reported, short term rentals are limited to a host's primary residence, hosts must register and pay an annual fee, and rules cover guest numbers, length of stay and events.

Coastal areas are handled separately

Reports on the approval said the rules would not immediately be enforced in coastal areas such as Marina del Rey, which fall under the California Coastal Commission. The County's fact sheet says the ordinance does not amend Local Coastal Programs, which are to be handled in a separate effort. Details may have changed since those sources were published.
