Airbnb guest checklist: check before you pay

One clear report. A complete documented history from reliable sources, so you and your family can decide with peace of mind.

Most Airbnb problems are visible before you pay if you know where to look. This checklist takes a few minutes.

1. Get the exact address

Listings hide the exact address until you book. Ask the host, or use the map pin and street view to narrow it down.

2. Find the registration number

City of Los Angeles listings must show a Home-Sharing Registration Number. If it is missing, ask why.

3. Check permits and cases

Open permits or code cases can signal a unit that was converted without approval.

4. Check hazard zones and the area

Fire, flood, fault and landslide zones, and nearby crime counts, are on the record.

5. Compare the listing to the record

If the listing claims a bedroom count or a pool that the record does not support, ask the host before you pay.
